At first glance it’s hard to miss the massive size of the boy. At six feet and five inches, Duke is very intimidating just from stature and his bulk only adds to it. For a boy who spends more time reading poetry than in the gym, the perplexity of how he became so muscular is still unressolved. Practically being torn from the pages of some fitness magazine, Duke has always had a commanding presence to him. It’s hard not to see him walk into a room due to sheer physicality. Height has always been an advantage to the boy except when it came to compact European cars. His appearance, combined with his height, make Duke appear much more mature and older than he is. However, it was symptomatic in his family to appear older. Even when he was ten it was hard to get into the circus for free as a kid. Anything exemplary about the boy would not include his wardrobe. When it comes to clothes, Duke has never been the most knowledgeable on fashion. He finds comfort in jeans and a t-shirt. However, the occasion sometimes calls for Duke to dress more nicely in slacks and blazers. But simple would be the adjective to describe the boys choice in clothing. So even if he isn't knowledgeable about fashion, he can still look clean cut.
With his head stuck in books and his quiet personality it's hard to find time to even stare into his face. Warm and welcoming eyes greet all who grab his attention from a book he just can't put down. Although warming as they are there is always a quality of solitude and shyness staring back at you. His eyes never a perfect shade of one color or the other, they're perpetually stuck in a phasing state. Some days blue eyes as clear as the sky can greet you some days green like the leaves of lively tree; however, they always appear vibrant. However, they never fail to warn people of impending danger when his mind is caught in a storm. A thick wrinkle forms at his brow in response to his change in emotion as his eyes capture the storm for display.
The rest of his features don't fail to live up to the rest of his appearance. Dark brown hair usually now remaining cropped close to his head in a suave motion to the side give him a more classic look compared to his days of unruly hair. At times his hair may flare out slightly at the end in a quirk he didn't know how to correct yet. He had once been called 'Adonis' by a group of giggling girls and ever since then the shy boy found himself to be more self-conscious of his features than anything. Sharp, defined cheek bones and a chiseled jaw line make the boy look like he was sculpted out of marble. A straight nose accentuates his classic features along with lips of an appropriate size and thickness. If anything, Duke curses his appearance for being more than mildly interesting and prefers to leave it behind an open book.
but people say I look like , garrett neff.

because, i mean, look at him.
I love, a list of reading, writing, grapefruit, organic food, quiet, shakespeare, smiles, helping others, wood work, open-mindedness, oscar wilde, the divine comedy, dr. seuss, the occasional drink, england, france, faulkner, c.s. lewis, orwell, james joyce, jazz music, duke ellington of course,
but I really despise, a list of excessive noise, violence, bullies, harming others, people who take things for face value, cheaters, overly aggressive girls, intolerance, people who take things for granted, selfish people, grammatical errors, cockiness, drugs
I personally think I'm pretty good at, some of your loyalty, writing, supportive, helpful, hidden wit, comforting, safe, keeping secrets,
though I should really work on , some of their shyness, push over, scared of women, poor social skills, appears arrogant at times in his appearance, reads newspapers to look for grammatical errors, guilty conscience
people tend to tell me I'm ,
creative because, writing may be in the genes but he takes it to another level.
strange because, because only duke can go from unhealthily guilty to jovial. [/ul]
but basically, I'm ,
At first, people see the formidable boy and their first conclusion comes to something of arrogance or something stemming from his looks. However, if one were to greet the boy they would find him a complete and utter push over. One of the tallest boys you'll find also happens to be one of the most sensitive and shy. It was more of a paradox than anything else. Duke had always been reserved from others and did what he was told with rarely any spoken words. His soft-spoken manners often surprise others who peg him to be a dumb giant like he appears. The Shakespeare reading boy pulls quite a surprise on those around him. His speech, although rare, is articulate and well planned. However, his delivery tends to get stuttered in certain situations, especially in front of large groups. He doesn't prefer his solitude over company, but he's so used to being alone since he didn't developed much social skills when he was younger. At times his own traits hamper his social skills making it harder to make friends. His constant shyness and limited conversational skills make others work to gain his friendship. Therefore, partying in large groups had never been something he did often. Occasionally he'll divulge in a few drinks with friends before departing early in the night to read or sleep.
However, once greeted to the gentle giant as some say, he becomes a good friend to keep. His words are solemn but wise and his loyalty never falters. It is those who know him quite well that see the other side to the often serious boy. His humor is witty and concise when in good company. Smiles exponentiate and deep-seeded laughs are more common. Loneliness was never something he wanted in his life, but things usually fell into place to make him feel more alone. His past is something he never shares with anyone except his family; however, he is listener. He likes to help people with their own problems to substitute his own failure with his past. Even though he is readily able to help others, he never seems to give himself any credit. He insults himself to no end when he does something embarrassing or asinine. Berating himself for failure is something he's done since he left the farm.
A lacking feature that can be viewed as important is his dealing with women. The last woman he had come to love was his brother's girlfriend and although she eventually returned it, it wasn't right. Sweeping his brother's girlfriend away left his brother in shambles and he attempted suicide. His heart was shattered. Since then his love life had been disintegrated to nothing. Love was idealistic but impractical now. Some scattered dates never lasting more than the first date and few simple kisses filled his resume. A boy of nineteen and with an appearance like his would get laughed at by fellow students. However little his relationship history is, Duke is a gentleman at heart, he'd never have to courage to walk up to a girl and tell them he liked them. It isn't in his nature to be so forth-coming with his feelings. With his inexperience, turning bright red when talking to girls occurs more often than he likes to admit. A few remarks and the boy is blushing like he was trying to turn into a tomato.
One of the best qualities that Duke possesses is his acceptance of others. No matter how different others are he will give them all the same treatment. Whether you're a nerd, a jock, a musician, gay, straight, or any race, Duke sees nothing but people's souls. He is a firm believer that appearances don't always reflect reality. This quality makes it easier for him to spot people's emotions and when they might be covering something up. However, if you do have genuinely bad intentions, like a cheater or liar, he finds it hard to trust them. With a false move with Duke, his rare temper could flare up in defense of others or of scruples. Duke is always up for helping others when they need it no matter what the deed may be. His parents had been true believers of this rule and implemented it in their children.
Although quiet, Duke always invokes a safe feeling in others when he is around; maybe it had to do with his size and musculature or his calming disposition. His wisdom and helpful nature make his company desirable when people are feeling lost or hurt. Sometimes he finds himself quoting Shakespeare or other writers in attempt to help.

& the good and the bad, in depth Jean-Luc Renaud had inherited a beautiful boutique from his parents when they had passed on. The boutique was famous in Paris for having some of the most beautiful bouquets in France. Bouquets arranged for royalty and celebrities came from the little shop in Paris. As the shop's flowers became highly demanded, Jean-Luc built more boutiques within France for a higher capital. But he refused to move away from his home in Paris because of his family. His children included the doe-eyed beauty, Clarisse. She had always been different from the rest, always wanting to explore and meet new people. During her college years, Clarisse went to England to study abroad about Literature. She returned with a man in tow. They had met in a class and over the months she had been there, they developed a close relationship. A few short months later and they had been married with a cornucopia of bouquets littering the reception afterwards. Adair Bennett was the heir to his family's fortune, Benediction enterprises, a multi-billion dollar corporation.
Clarisse had always known that she wanted to write, the only other passion that preoccupied her time besides family. Soon after publishing her first novel, she discovered she was pregnant. Of course the news brought joy to their budding family as the couple moved across the pond to London. Her first novel hit well amongst critics and readers alike, gracing the bestsellers list. Not soon after was Louis born. As a jazz fan, Adair insisted that he name his son after one of his favorite musicians, Louis Armstrong. However, the Bennetts wasted no time in increasing their family size as another one was in the oven. Clarisse spent her time relaxing in London or Paris as she continued to write while Adair took care of the family business. Duke, named after Duke Ellington was the next in the family line...also followed by Evelyn, Coltrane and Billie, Adele, Cosette, Miles, and Basie. Such a large family didn't phase the Bennetts, since after all they wanted a large family to love and cherish. However, their aspirations were soon cut short right after the release of Clarisse's fifth and most popular novel.
For weeks after the birth of Basie, fatigue and frailty consumed her spirits. As the worrying husband he was, Adair sent for a doctor after a stumble down a flight of stairs sent her straight to bed. They said that it had been months and yet no one picked up on the symptoms soon enough. Cancer grasped her body, leaving her soul and mind in torment over the impending departure she knew was in store for her family. Clarisse spent her last few months at home, writing still, while she took comfort in the large family she created. Too distraught over anything else, Adair took a leave of absence from his job in order to spend time with his wife before she passed. It was Adair who had found Clarisse slumbering peacefully. After the funeral the family dynamic shifted and the close relationships grew tight yet some fell apart. Adair took his grief to work, spending more time at the office than at home. Those odd quirks of Clarisse within his children was too much for him. Duke and his older brother Louis found themselves at the helm of their household, helping around the house when they could to preoccupy themselves. Barely ten and eleven year olds were taking care of their younger siblings in the absence of their grieving father, what a sight. After some time, Jean-Luc found that Adair's coping mechanism would do nothing but part his family even more as he distanced himself. A brief and angry discussion with the English lad was all it took for the French man to send him home to his children to plea for silent forgiveness. Jean-Luc came to stay with the family for a few years to help his son-in-law with the numerous children he had neglected.
Duke had always been the closest to his mother when he was younger, she was the inspiration for his own passion in writing. He admired her so, that his heart broke when she passed away. Afterwards, he became reserved and rarely spoke unless spoken to first. Throughout his adolescence, Duke was the shy Bennett, especially compared to his brother Louis. Louis was everything he wanted to be, social, outgoing, and fun. Louis also had everything that Duke ever wanted, especially when it came to one particular thing. Without much social graces, Duke was never great with the ladies, even though he was the epitome of tall, dark, and handsome. Fifteen was an awkward stage for Duke as he grew taller than most students in his grade, making him look much older and mature. He had hit puberty and the thought of women made his mind spin and his stomach sick. Then there was Sophie. But like everything else he wanted, she was his brother's. Sophie had been the subject of so many poems that Duke had lost count of the ones he had written about her, however, she was too out of reach. Loyalty to family was above all else, especially love. Duke just couldn't shake off the feelings though, causing him to lose a battle with his heart. He began to avoid everyone, especially Sophie and Louis.
It was during the summer, that things began to go awry. Louis was off at soccer camp leaving Duke to his feelings as Sophie began to seek out her boyfriend's brother for company. At first it entailed her talking with him listening solely before it progressed into a steady friendship, but he couldn't help himself. And apparently, neither could she. At seventeen, the most he had gotten with a girl was a hug so it came to surprise when Sophie kissed him one afternoon while they were hanging about his home. The initial shock caused him to stagger back as if burned. However, for once, Duke’s heart took control as he returned the kiss of a feeble looking girl. The atrocity of what he had done did not hit him until the following morning when he woke up next to her. He did the most sensible thing he could think of, he ran. He avoided any trace of society for the next few days until his brother came home from camp to have Sophie hanging on his arm. Duke was repulsed not only by his actions, but his thoughts. A short confrontation with Sophie left what they had still in the air as the absence of Louis allowed them to continue on with the sinful acts they had started. It had carried on all summer, yet Duke found it harder and harder to lie to his brother everyday while Sophie seemed to have ease with it. The secret was well kept until Louis unexpectedly returned early from an outing with his friends and found the pair tangled together. A fight erupted between the two brothers leaving not a soul to spare without anguish in their hearts.
Louis took it all very hard, even his playful attitude couldn’t conceal his pain. He had loved Sophie and she had taken his love and tossed it carelessly aside, with his brother no less. He had always known Duke had a thing for Sophie, but he thought Duke knew where to draw the line. So Louis thought if he didn’t know where to draw the line, surely Louis could with the help of a sharp instrument. It was seven year old Basie that had found Louis in the bathroom. Duke packed his bags the next day, forgoing a visit to the hospital for he knew the reasons behind what Louis did. Duke headed off to Paris to visit his grandfather who had moved back to Paris three years ago to manage his business. Taking a year off of school away from his home allowed Duke time to think and reform. It also provided him ample time to heal his wounds through words which eventually became a script of sorts. Duke had always been a writer, it was in his blood, so by writing the events down in a similar fashion worked like a journal. Unaware of the reasons of Duke’s arrival, Jean-Luc contacted an old friend in the movie business he had worked for after Jean-Luc accidentally found Duke’s script. A few phone calls later, Duke found himself as a screen writer for a small budgeted film. It was astounding that such a young writer could be working on movies, and critics seemed to think the same as the movie rolled around into theatres months later. However, questions began to rise about how much of the story was fiction. Duke has yet to comment on that fact.
After a year passed by in Paris, Duke felt it was finally time to head home to London to patch up family ties, however, he hadn’t been told Louis was off in Berlin for school. The air was too tense at home for Duke, telling him that nothing was solved, just suppressed. The moving boxes was a key indicator of this. Benediction was moving its headquarters to Los Angeles for a more strategic location as the business continued to grow. While emptying boxes in their new home, Duke came across the unfinished novel his mother began writing before she died. A project he now vows to complete some day. Skipping a year of school left Duke without a diploma, meaning he would have to finish high school in LA. Duke began towards the end of junior year at Blair, being his usual self, reserved.
Still writing, Duke quickly finished up at Blair and headed off to college, finishing up in three short years. While at Oxford, Duke published one more book and like his mother, he hit the best sellers. As his career launched off he felt something lacking in his life until a friend of his returned from Iraq. Mick, his friend, was a reporter that had toured for a year in order to establish a direct connection to the war. So when Mick offered to take Duke with him, he couldn't deny the offer. It gave him a chance to see how others truly had it in Iraq. His problems seemed so insignificant compared to those fighting and he found himself letting go over his years of guilt. About six months into his tour, their battalion was attacked by rogue agents. Having his head almost blown off wasn't enough for him since he spent another six months in Iraq. Instead of flying to England, Duke headed back to LA to visit his brothers and sisters. However, he felt jovial almost, for someone coming back from war, it was strange.
